Nepal | A Unique and Diverse Country in South Asia

 Nepal is a beautiful landlocked country located in the heart of  South Asia with a small area of 147,516 square km. It is located in the white Himalayas and bordered to the north by Mainland China, and to the south, east, and west sides by India. Nepal is separated from Bangladesh by the narrow Siliguri Corridor of India and separated from Bhutan by the Indian state “Sikkim”.

 The physical features of Nepal are quite diverse which include mountains, wetlands, hills, and plains of the Terai region. The country experiences a various range of climates, including extreme cold in the Himalayan region and tropical rain in the hilly and terai ranges. Nepal is full of more than 6,000 rivers, many of the rivers are ever-flowing from the Himalayan snows or the lowland rains.


 Most people think of this country as a mountainous nation full of hills and the white Himalayan range. But the fact is the Plain Terai region of Nepal it's flat, fertile, and also the most populous region. It covers 15% of the total land area of Nepal.

 Major important cities in Nepal are Kathmandu (Capital City), Biratnagar, Butwal, Pokhara, Birgunj, Hetauda, Dhangadi, and Bhairahawa. Because of open borders with India by three sides, there is a great influence of the Indian market as well as culture in Nepal.

With a total population of around 30 million people, Nepal is one of the most diverse countries in the world. People in the Himalayan region are mostly Mongolian origin people whereas peoples in the Hilly region are mostly Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Sudra. In the southernmost region, the majority of the people are madheshies, and are of mixed backgrounds. Nepal is also considered the oldest Hindu country however it is declared a secular country by its constitution and people live together with peace and harmony. The majority of the Nepalese are Hindu. moreover, Buddhist Christianity and Islam are also practiced by many people.

Being rich in cultural aspects, there are different costumes, more than 120 languages, and varieties of marriage practices followed by people of different cultural backgrounds in Nepal. 

If you are in Nepal, don't disrespect cows, because cows are considered the mother (Mata) of Nepalese people. However, you can find cows walking in the streets freely. Thinking about beef is also rude here because cows are symbolized as a goddess Lakshmi here in Nepal.


Foods in Nepal differ from region to region. The majority of the people eat daal(lentil soup), bhat (rice), tarkari, and roti(flatbread). However, cuisine varieties are different from cultures and regions. You can find Nepalese food habits quite similar to Indian because. Some street foods like Momos, Chow Mein, Pani Puri, and Chat pate are quite famous here.

People from different countries come to Nepal for pilgrimage and visit the holy Lumbini area. In other words, it is Mecca and Medina of Buddhist people.

It might sound awkward to someone but there is a living goddess in Nepal which is also considered as "Kumari". Generally, Kumari is a virgin girl whose feet shouldn't touch the ground. A perfect young girl is selected at the Kumari by the Newar community. He can get married and have to live with different religious restrictions. There are different opinions towards it, some people think it is cruel behavior for a girl whereas it is equal religiously important.
